Today was Miss America Serves Day - the national day where local Miss America titleholders complete service projects in their communities. Team California focused on serving the houseless populations within our state. From collecting toiletries to serving meals, my sister titleholders made a huge impact no matter where they served. Our state also raised $3,500 for Children's Miracle Network and our state scholarship fund!
My director Gabino and I headed out to Oakland to hand out sweatshirts and blankets to people living in tent cities and underneath the freeways. It was a moving experience because we got to interact directly with the community that we were serving. Everyone we met was excited and grateful for their new sweatshirts, especially because of the rain and wind that has recently been pummeling the Northern California coast. We learned a lot from each interaction - one man we met, Don, encouraged us to always smile because it takes less muscles than frowning! It's important to recognize that people who may not have a house are no different from you or I, and they each deserve love and respect.
My Miss America Serves experience was impactful and moving. I'm grateful to be a part of an organization that prioritizes service and I look forward to returning to the Oakland community with more resources soon!
Here's a video journaling our day:
